D. Boone Dawson, three-time mayor of Charleston and seeking a second Republican gubernatorial nomination, had a 12,000 vote lead over RJF with 1742 of 2796 precincts counted. Funkhouser would lose, while carrying the northern part of the state, and gaining 636 votes in his own Jefferson County to Dawson's 67. ("The Martinsburg Journal," May 10, 1944, P. 1).
